The customs officers union have suggested that the technology could undermine safety. The new system promises wait times of 20 minutes or less. With 14 million travelers passing through Montreal’s Trudeau Airport every year, waits at customs sometimes spiraled to one hour, or longer. The $4-million system was installed on June 5 and is identical to the one installed in Vancouver to deal with the high volume accompanying the 2010 winter Olympics. Travelers simply put their documents into the Automated Border Clearance machine and then proceed to an agent who then speedily processes the papers.
